NIHR Board of Commissioners Convenes its 1st Procedural Meeting

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Council of Commissioners (CC) convened its 1st procedural meeting on Saturday, 22 April 2017 at the NIHR’s headquarters in the Seef District.  The meeting was chaired by HE Mr. Ahmed Mahdi Alhaddad, being the eldest member, in compliance with the provisions of the NIHR Establishment Law No. 26 of 2014, which has been modified by the Decree Law No. 20 of 2016. 

HE Mr. Ahmed Mahdi Alhaddad congratulated members of the CC on the occasion of the honor bestowed upon them by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, who issued the Royal Order No. 23 of 2017 appointing them to serve in the NIHR as one team in order to uphold the values of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The CC reviewed the Law No. 26 of 2014 on establishment of the NIHR, which has been modified by the Decree Law No. 20 of 2016, as well as the internal regulation on the organization and work of the NIHR Council of Commissioners, which has been issued by virtue of the CC Resolution No. 48 of 2017, and the NIHR CC Code of Conduct, which has been issued by virtue of the CC Resolution No. 13 of 2016.

Afterwards, elections were conducted where HE Mr. Saeed Mohamed Alfaihani was elected to the position of NIHR’s Chairman and HE Mr. Abdullah Ahmed Alderazi to the position of Vice Chairman by acclamation.

On this occasion, NIHR Chairman HE Mr. Alfaihani expressed his thanks and appreciation to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, for his royal trust and issuance of the Royal Order No. 23 of 2017, as well as to members of the CC for granting their trust to him and Mr. Alderazi and electing them as NIHR Chairman and Vice Chairman, respectively.  He added, “I’m honored to exist between such human rights figures, which are comprised by the Council, and I’m totally confident that we shall act as one team, in order to enhance the human rights awareness in the Kingdom of Bahrain and cooperate with the relevant authorities for the support and protection of human rights”.

The panel further selected members and heads of NIHR’s Standing Committees.  Results came as follows:  Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up to be headed by Mrs. Dina Abdulrahman AlLadhi and membership of Mr. Khalid Abdulaziz Alsha’er and Mrs. Rawda Salman Alaradi, Committee on Civil and Political Rights to be headed by Mr. Ahmed Mahdi Alhaddad and membership of Dr. Badr Mohamed Adel and Mrs. Wedad Radi Almossawi, and Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights to be headed by Ms. Maria Khouri and membership of Dr. Aisha Salem Mubarak and Dr. Hameed Ahmed Hussein.

It is worth mentioning that NIHR is responsible for the enhancement, development and protection of human rights, the promotion of its values and dissemination of awareness of it, and the contribution to the free and independent exercise thereof, in accordance with Paris Principles adopted by the UN General Assembly Resolution No. (134/48) of 1993, which are taken on by the NIHR as its legal reference.
