NIHR Council of Commissioners convenes its 7th Regular Meeting

04 Oct 2018

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Council of Commissioners convened its 7th regular meeting at the NIHR’s headquarters in Seef district under headed by Ms. Maria Khoury, Chairperson of the NIHR

During the meeting, the NIHR’s National Strategy and Action Plan for the years 2019 - 2021 was adopted, with the aim of  making human rights concepts part of the national lifestyle, where four main themes were selected for the next three years, namely:  environmental impact on human rights, human rights and sustainable economic development, the right to equal treatment and the promotion of awareness of human rights principles in civil society institutions and the business sector.

The new Strategy includes challenges and opportunities that have not been effectively resolved in the past or are limited by legal or administrative infrastructure.  These four themes will be worked upon in conjunction with ongoing work on topics that are the core of the NIHR’s terms of reference, which revolve around the promotion, protection, monitoring and reporting of human rights.  The NIHR will add scientific research topics to these terms of reference in order to achieve intellectual leadership in this area.

The Strategy also contained Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), for which the NIHR will establish a Committee on the Follow-up and Assessment of the Strategy and Action Plan, which will include a number of members of the Council of Commissioners and the Secretary General, which will pursue the implementation of the Strategy using various monitoring and assessment tools.

At the end of the meeting, the Council of Commissioners further adopted NIHR Secretariat General Action Report for the third quarter of 2018, and listened to a summary of the work of the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission (PDRC), to which the NIHR is a member.
