NIHR Council of Commissioners convenes its 8th Regular Meeting

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Council of Commissioners convened its 8th regular meeting at the NIHR’s headquarters in Seef district under the chairpersonship of Ms. Maria Khoury, Chairperson of the NIHR.

At the beginning of the meeting, members heard a briefing on the work of the three NIHR's standing committees, presented by the Head of the NIHR's Committee on Civil and Political Rights and the Head of the NIHR's Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, as well as a briefing on the complaints received by the NIHR, requests for legal assistance submitted to it, the cases monitored via the media and social media and the actions taken thereupon by the NIHR's Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up.

The Council further stated the importance of abiding by the 4 themes of the NIHR's strategy for the years 2019 - 2021, which revolves around environmental impact on human rights, human rights and sustainable economic development, the right to equal treatment and the promotion of awareness of human rights principles in civil society institutions and the business sector, which have been divided for each of the three years in the action plan annexed to the strategy.

The Council of Commissioners adopted the Secretariat General's action report for the fourth quarter of 2018, in which the work of the NIHR's Secretariat General during the past two years and its role in supporting the work of the Council of Commissioners were commended.  The Council also heard a summary of the recent work of the Commission on the Rights of Prisoners and Detainees, as the NIHR is a member to the Commission pursuant to Article (2) of Decree No. (61) of 2013 establishing and defining the powers of the Commission for the Rights of Prisoners and Detainees.
