First procedural meeting of the NIHR’s Council of to elect the chairperson and Vice Chairperson

The Council of Commissioners of the National Institution for Human Rights held their first procedural meeting on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at the NIHR headquarters at the Seef District. Elections were held to choose both the Chairperson and Vice Chairpersonn. HE Dr. Abdul-Aziz Hassan Abul was elected unopposed as NIHR’s Chairmanship. HE Abdullah Ahmed Al-Derazi was also elected unopposed as Deputy Chairman.

The Council of Commissioners also approved the standing committees in accordance with the Royal Order. Then elections were held for the heads of the committees. HE Abdullah Ahmed Issa Al-Derazi was elected Chairperson of the Complaints, monitoring and follow-up, HE Ms. Jamila Salman Nassif as Chair of Civil and Political Rights and HE Dr. Fouzia Saeed Al-Saleh as Chairperson of Economic, Social and Cultural rights. Also during the meeting, HE Dr. Ahmed Abdullah Farhan was reappointed as Secretary-General of the NIHR for a four-year term. It was then decided to hold the first regular meeting of the Council of Commissioners on Wednesday, 27 February 2013.

It is worth mentioning that the NIHR was established pursuant to Royal Order No. (46) for 2009, as amended by Royal Order No. (28) 2012, which stipulates the role the NIHR plays in the promotion, development and protection of human rights, working to consolidate the human rights values and awareness of such values and contributing to guaranteeing the exercise of these rights freely and independently, in compliance with the Paris Principles, adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations under Resolution No. (48/134) for 1993 as legal reference. It is also worth noting that His Majesty the King issued Royal Order No. (7) for 2013 restructuring of the National Institution for Human Rights to begin the work assigned to it as a beacon of human rights awareness and a center for expertise and advice in the field of human rights.
