NIHR’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up convenes its 6th Regular Meeting

25 Sep 2019

Under the chairpersonship of Ms. Maria Khoury and membership of Mrs. Rawdha Alaradi, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up convened its 6th regular meeting at the NIHR’s headquarters in the Seef District.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Committee discussed a number of the cases monitored by the NIHR relating to the violation of Ministry of Labor and Social Development's Resolution No. (3) of 2013 on banning work at noon, based upon the initiative launched by the NIHR to report any violation of the provisions of the said Resolution, which provides for banning work of employees whose nature of work requires being exposed to the sunlight and working in open places at 12 – 4 pm during July and August.  The Committee discussed the actions taken by it, the correspondences sent by it to the concerned parties and their response thereto.

The Committee also reviewed a detailed statement of all its previous resolutions and recommendations and the actions taken thereupon.  It dealt with the importance of bringing into action the 10 Principles for My Protection and Welfare as a Girl, Boy or Adolescent with Disabilities and educating the community on the importance of respecting their rights, which the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Disability has required the national institutions to promote.  The NIHR has started to promote those Principles via its social media and coordinated to hold a visit to Seef Mall and a number of other bodies that will be announced later in order to examine ways to benefit from them.

The Committee concluded its meeting by reviewing the complaints received by it, the legal assistance provided by it and the cases monitored via the media and social media from August to September, amounting to 6 complaints, which varied between the right to a nationality, the right to physical and mental integrity and the right to enjoy various public rights and freedoms.  It has also provided 37 legal assistance cases, monitored 10 cases via the media and social media and received 94 phone calls via the toll-free hotline for receiving complaints during the said period.

It is worth mentioning that the NIHR receives complaints and applications for legal assistance either personally or via the toll-free hotline (80001144), the NIHR’s website (www.nihr.org.bh), or the (NIHR Bahrain) mobile smartphone application.
