NIHR’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up convenes its 10th Regular Meeting

26 Jan 2020

Under the chairpersonship of Ms. Maria Khoury and membership of Mr. Khaled Alshaer and Mrs. Rawdha Alaradi, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up convened its 10th regular meeting at the NIHR’s headquarters in the Seef District.

The Committee opened its meeting by reviewing its entire previous resolutions and recommendations and the actions taken thereupon, where it discussed its action taken with regard to the legal assistance related to the claim of an employer’s failure to pay the salary of an employee for more than five months.  It also reviewed what has been done with regard to its request to the Child Protection Centre to consider the situation of a number of resident children after their father has been sentenced.

The Committee also reviewed its report on its representation of the NIHR in attending trial hearings of various degrees and types with a view to ensure that everybody enjoys fair trial guarantees.

In a related context, the Committee discussed complaints received, legal assistance provided and cases monitored via the media and social media during December 2019 and January 2020, where their contents varied between the right to health, the right to education, the right to social security and the right to enjoying various public rights and freedoms, and took appropriate measures in thereupon.

The NIHR, through its supervisory responsibility, affirms that it shall continue its consistent approach to protect and consolidate human rights of all citizens and residents in the Kingdom of Bahrain and their access to their rights without any discrimination.

Based upon the NIHR’s keenness to contribute to activating the provisions of Law No. (18) of 2017 on Alternative Penalties and Measures, the Committee reviewed a statement of cases received by the NIHR and monitored via the media and social media on the application of the provisions of the aforementioned law, where the NIHR shall address the concerned authorities and coordinate with them with regard to the applications that meet the requirements of the Alternative Penal Code, based on the NIHR’s belief in the importance of rehabilitating and integrating convicts and preparing them to engage in society and contribute to its rise.

It is worth mentioning that the NIHR receives complaints and applications for legal assistance either personally or via the toll-free hotline (80001144), the NIHR’s website (www.nihr.org.bh), or the (NIHR Bahrain) mobile smart phone application.
