NIHR’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up convenes its 5th Regular Meeting

Under the chairpersonship of Ms. Maria Khoury and membership of Mr. Khalid Abdul-Aziz Al-Shaer and Mrs. Rawdha Al-Aradi, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up convened its 5th regular meeting at the NIHR’s headquarters in the Seef District.

During the meeting, the Committee reviewed all the complaints received by the NIHR during August.

The Committee discussed the importance of the NIHR’s exercising of its powers referred to in its Incorporation Law through examining the possibility of cooperation with the competent bodies in Bahrain pursuant to its available possibilities to promote the ten principles for the protection, well-being and development of girls, boys and adolescents with disabilities and to educate the community on the importance of having their rights respected, at the request of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Disabilities to the NIHR.

The Committee also discussed the allegations raised in a number of social media relating to the mechanism adopted by the Ministry of Education with regard to the system of

 

 

scholarships for outstanding students, where the Minister of Education has been addressed.

It also discussed the issues of hunger strikes for a number of inmates at the Reform and Rehabilitation Center (Jaw Prison), where the Committee discussed the visit held by the a delegation of the NIHR to follow-up on the health status of the hunger strikers and ensured that they received health care.  The NIHR works on a daily basis with the Center’s management to provide a number of their legal demands.

The Committee stressed the importance of respecting the practice of religious rites for all in accordance with the Bahrain’s Constitution as well as the laws, decrees and resolutions in-force, where the NIHR will make a number of visits to the reform, rehabilitation and detection centers during the upcoming Ashura season to ensure that all inmates practice their religious rituals without discrimination.

The Committee concluded its meeting by examining all its previous resolutions and recommendations and the actions taken thereupon.
