NIHR’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up convenes its 2nd Regular Meeting

28 May 2019

Under the chairpersonship of Ms. Maria Khoury and membership of Mr. Khaled Alshaer and Mrs. Rawdha Alaradi, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up has convened its 2nd regular meeting.

The Committee reviewed all the complaints received by the NIHR during April and May, as well as the legal assistance provided, which amounted to (20) cases.  In addition, it monitored one case through the media and social media.  It should be also noted that the NIHR also received (331) calls via the toll-free hotline for receiving complaints during the said period.

In addition, the Committee discussed the reports on a number of court hearings that it has attended in order to ensure the availability of fair trial guarantees for the convicts.

The Committee also addressed the allegations received by the NIHR on cases of food poisoning among a number of inmates of the Reform and Rehabilitation Center (Jaw Prison), and commended interest given by the NIHR and relevant parties in the convicts and detainees’ enjoyment of their rights guaranteed by the Constitution and related laws, where the NIHR contacted the Ministry of the Interior at the same day in order to verify the validity of these allegations, which confirmed their invalidity and the importance of obtaining information from official sources.

It is worth mentioning that the NIHR receives complaints and applications for legal assistance either personally or via the toll-free hotline (80001144), the NIHR’s website (www.nihr.org.bh), or the (NIHR Bahrain) mobile smartphone application.
