National Institution for Human Rights participates in the Regional Workshop "mechanisms of cooperation between civil society and government to promote citizenship"

National Institution for Human Rights participated in the regional workshop titled "mechanisms of cooperation between civil society and government to promote citizenship" organized by the Kuwait Society for Human Rights in collaboration with the World Movement for Democracy (WMD) and Network of Democrats in the Arab World (NDAW) on Saturday and Sunday 7-8 February 2015 at the Movenpick Hotel in Kuwait. The workshop was attended by a number of participants from Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Sudan, Yemen, Mauritania, Bahrain, UAE, Oman and Kuwait.

Mr. Fadhel Habib, Head of the Studies and Research unit in the National Institution for Human Rights pointed out that the workshop included a presentation for "Civic Space Initiative" of the Network of Democrats in the Arab World. The initiative, which is the first of its kind, aims to build the capacities of the activists in Arabic-speaking civic society organizations as to be implemented in partnership with the World Movement for Democracy, the Organization of Article 91, and the World Alliance for Citizen Participation (CIVICUS), the International Centre for the Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL), and the support of the Swedish government.

The working groups also held dialogues and discussions on the freedom of the formation of organizations for the participants in the training program of the initiative, as well as activists in the civic society organizations in the Arab countries; in order to define the role of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and the formation of association, as well as develop to their skills and enrich the reports they submit including their observations and contribute to the creation of an environment that allow for sustainable  democratic reform process and provide new approaches to the spread of democracy in the Arab world.

It is noteworthy that the National Institution for Human Rights has signed a memorandum of understanding in November 2014 with the Kuwaiti Society for Human Rights, to reinforce the bonds of international coordination and cooperation between them in the field of development and promotion of human rights.
