National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) Participates in the 13th General Assembly Meeting of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions

The Chairman of Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Mr. Farid Ghazi, Chairman of NIHR’s Committee on Civil and Political Rights Mrs. Jameela Salman and Chairman of Complaints and Monitoring Unit Mr. Badee’ Jubail, representing the NIHR’s Secretariat General, participated in the 13th General Assembly meeting of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions held in Muscat, capital of Oman.

At the beginning of the meeting, the chairmanship of the 13th General Assembly was relinquished  to Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) Chairman Dr. Isa bin Said Al Kayoumi.  The meeting included selecting Algeria as the host country for the next general assembly meeting in 2017. In addition, the Arab Network executive committee members were named; selecting by consensus the Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC), the Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) in Palestine and the National Human Rights Council (NHRC) in Morocco.

The Assembly discussed the annual report of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions for 2015, reviewed what was achieved in the Network’s action plan for 2016, discussed the financial report, approved the Network’s draft action plan for 2017 and followed-up recommendations of the General Assembly.

The Assembly further discussed amendments on statutes of the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).  In this respect, the NIHR presented its feedback and opinions on the statute of GANHRI and the rules of procedure of the Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA), as Mr. Fareed Ghazi, Chairperson of the delegation, reviewed the feedback and emphasized the importance of being oriented to the development of more transparent and democratic standards for rating of the NHRI apart from any political orientations that may influence the rating.  He further called for unification of positions and efforts of the Arab national institutions.  

On the other hand, the Chairperson of the Assembly praised the NIHR’s feedback and opinions and recommended for more study of them.  He further invited other institutions to present their feedback in this regard.
