13 Dec 2022

Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, Chairman of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), stated that the open prisons system, in addition to being a qualitative leap in the field of correction and rehabilitation in the Kingdom of Bahrain, will greatly help in expanding the application of the Alternative Sanctions and Measures Law, within the framework of developing and modernising the security system in a humane manner towards individuals to whom judicial rulings are applied in various crimes and misdemeanours, in line with international human rights standards.

During his visit to the Open Prisons Complex, in the presence of Minister of Interior, Attorney-General, Chief of Public Security, and Director-General of the General Administration for the Implementation of Alternative Sentences and Sanctions, Al-Derazi said that this project will contribute to the development of the criminal justice system by modernising methods for treating inmates, by rehabilitating them in order to get used to practicing their normal lives in preparation for their integration into society, in order to preserve family stability and protect the social fabric.

Al-Derazi added, “What we witnessed today in the Open Prisons Complex, including residential, educational and sports buildings equipped with the latest systems to provide services and needs of the inmates in an integrated manner, reflects the extent of the State's commitment to respecting human rights that were safeguarded by the National Action Charter and the Constitution, and represent a pledge to the Kingdom with international agreements”.

Al-Derazi appreciated the constructive cooperation between the Ministry of Interior and the NIHR, as well as the NIHR’s involvement in everything that would contribute to the consolidation and promotion of human rights in police work, stressing the NIHR’s full support for all matters that are in the interest of the State and the citizen.
