NIHR is continuing Announced and Unannounced Visits to Reform and Rehabilitation Centers, Healthcare Units and Hospitals

13 Jun 2019

Based upon the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s keenness to carry out announced and unannounced field visits to monitor the human rights situation in reform institutions, places of detention, labor gatherings, health and education units or any other public place suspected of being a site of human rights violations, pursuant to its terms of reference as set forth in its Incorporation Law No. (26) of 2014, as amended by its Decree-Law No. (20) of 2016, the NIHR is continuing its declared and undeclared field visits to monitor the human rights situation in reform institutions, places of detention, labor gatherings and health and education units, as it recently visited the Rehabilitation and Rehabilitation Center (Jaw Prison) to meet with some guests to get a closer look at their situation and living conditions.  The NIHR also visited the Psychiatric Hospital to see the conditions of the patients there, ascertain the security and safety requirements for the convicts and detainees who are admitted to the hospital and ensure that the necessary security guarding is available to prevent any danger to them or other medical staff and patients.  The NIHR reached a number of recommendations, which were sent to the relevant authorities.

These visits are part of the plan adopted by the NIHR, aiming to visit the largest number of reform and rehabilitation centers, places of arrest and detention and healthcare units during 2019, in which at least ten places have been determined, which will be visited by the NIHR upon a schedule that ends in December of this year.

The NIHR receives complaints and applications for legal assistance either personally or via the toll-free hotline (80001144), the NIHR’s website (www.nihr.org.bh), or the (NIHR Bahrain) mobile smartphone application.
