NIHR receives US Ambassador

The Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), HE Ms. Maria Khoury, received Mr. Justin Siberell, Ambassador of the United States of American to the Kingdom of Bahrain, where the two sides reviewed aspects of cooperation between them and ways to activate training programs aiming to promote and protect human rights, in addition to the NIHR’s role based upon the terms of reference mentioned in its Incorporation Law, which aim to spread the culture of human rights and introduce it to the community.

She explained the importance of the annual report, which deals with the human rights situation in Bahrain, including the functions of the NIHR in the area of the promotion and protection of human rights, which the NIHR annually submits to His Majesty the King, as well as the parallel reports issued by the NIHR, especially those relating to treaty bodies, the Universal Periodic Review and other reports.

For his part, the US Ambassador praised NIHR’s role and Bahrain’s efforts to combat trafficking in persons, pointing out that the Kingdom of Bahrain was ranked first in the classification of the most successful countries in combating the trafficking in persons as per the annual report of the US Department of State that was recently issued, which was based upon the progress made in the State legal and legislative system.

Ms. Khoury explained that the NIHR, through its assigned role, is working side by side with the National Committee to Combat Trafficking in Persons, as it opened a branch for it in the Committee’s Expatriate Workers Service and Support Center in Sehla, in order to receive complaints about human rights in general and trafficking in persons in particular, in addition to the free hotline (80001144) dedicated to receive complaints, where it examines each complaint separately and refers the matters that fall under its terms of reference to the concerned bodies with effective follow-up.
