In line with the broad mandate granted to the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) in the field of protecting and promoting human rights, and the jurisdiction granted to it under the provisions of its Establishment Law, the NIHR’s Committee on Visiting Detention Places and Facilities has conducted an inspection visit to the Child Welfare Home (Batelco Home), affiliated to the Ministry of Social Development, in order to determine the general and private conditions of the inmates, residents and workers in it, and to ensure the extent to which they enjoy their guaranteed and legally prescribed rights under national legislation in accordance with international human rights standards.

During the visit, the Committee listened to a brief presentation by Mrs. Huda Al-Hamoud, Director of Social Welfare Department at the Ministry, on the various services provided in the Home, and the social groups of its inmates, and stated their accommodation procedures.

The Committee appreciated the efforts of the workers and those in charge of providing comprehensive protection and care for the children residing in Batelco Home, by creating a safe and positive environment in a way that guarantees a decent standard of living for them.  At the same time, the NIHR’s delegation was briefed on the facilities of the Home, and toured all the rooms and corridors, where they met with a number of inmates, and took notes on their visit.
