NIHR receives a Delegation of John Hopkins University Students

Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), Ms. Maria Khoury received a delegation of John Hopkins University students, currently visiting the Kingdom of Bahrain in order to review Bahrain’s experience in the area of the advancement of women, in coordination with the Supreme Council for Women. Presence was Mrs. Rawdha Salman Alaradi, member of the NIHR’s Council of Commissioners.

During the meeting, Ms. Khoury welcomed the visiting delegation and presented a detailed explanation on the competences of the NIHR and its role in dealing with the human rights situation in the Kingdom of Bahrain, as well as its joint cooperation with the Supreme Council for Women to support all that would enhance women's enjoyment of all their rights., noting the great and tangible achievements of Bahraini women at various political, economic, social and cultural levels, the matter which has established their position as a key partner in Bahraini society alongside men, to become an honorable model on local, regional and international levels.

Ms. Khoury stated that the NIHR has worked to empower women to obtain decent work by adopting a policy that promotes gender equality and the empowerment of women at all levels.  The percentage of women in the NIHR is more than 60% of the total members of the Council of Commissioners and Secretariat staff, in line with the Council's efforts and attempts aimed at empowering Bahraini women and integrating them into comprehensive development programs, and in realization of the principles of equality and non-discrimination.

For their part, the delegation expressed their thanks for the good hospitality and raised a number of questions related to the work of the NIHR and its terms of reference, which have all been answered.
