NIHR Participates in the Annual Meeting of Asia-Pacific Forum (APF) in Geneva

Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, Chairman of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), and Chancellor Yasser Ghanim Shahin, NIHR Secretary-General, have participated in the annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Forum (APF), which is being held on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

The meeting was opened by Mr. Dhawan Song, Chairman of the APF in Korea, by reviewing the activities held by the APF, which amounted to about 40 activities, including visits to a number of member institutions in the Asia-Pacific region, with the aim of providing technical support, meeting with working groups of the UN, especially the Working Group on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, dialogue on persons with disabilities, forced disappearance and climate change, in addition to training courses, whether class-based or virtual, which are aimed at raising the level of work in national institutions.

The financial report of the APF and the operations plan for the years 2023-2024, aimed at including more national human rights institutions in the Asia-Pacific region that comply with the Paris Principles and can exercise their mandate in safety, were adopted during the meeting, creating national human rights institutions that have an enhanced capacity to deal effectively with Human rights issues, protection and response to them, in addition to increasing the voices of national human rights institutions in regional and international forums, and finally making the APF a network that works closely with human rights priorities, which center around gender equality, the environment, climate change, human rights defenders and civil space.

The meeting also discussed the proposed amendments to the Articles of Association of the GANHRI, aimed at increasing oversight of all national institutions, whether classified A or B, to ensure their compliance with the Paris Principles.
