NIHR’s Delegation Meets with the Association for the Prevention of Torture

Under the chairpersonship of the NIHR’s ,The NIHR’s delegation and in the presence of Vice chairperson Mr. Abdullah Al-Derazi and Member of the Council of Commissioners and Member of the Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Committee Dr. Hameed Hussein, met with the Secretary-General of the Association for the Prevention of Torture Mr. Mark Thomson on the sidelines of the NIHR delegation’s participation in the 33rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Chairperson of the delegation welcomed the Secretary -General of the Association for the Prevention of Torture and presented a brief on efforts of Bahrain in the field of institutional building, represented by the establishment of Special Investigation Unit, Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission and Ombudsman, as well as aspects of cooperation between the NIHR and the abovementioned authorities, especially in common terms of reference.  He added that the NIHR held a number of visits to reform and rehabilitation centers for supervision and investigation of complaints received from prisoners or detainees.

On his part, Member of the Council of Commissioners Dr. Hameed Hussein highlighted the mechanism of receiving complaints and requests for assistance in issues related to the NIHR’s terms of reference, indicating that the NIHR always attempts to remove obstacles facing all individuals in submitting their complaints.

The Secretary General of the Association for the Prevention of Torture commended the NIHR’s efforts in the enhancement and protection of human rights and at the same time honored the combination of efforts and constructive cooperation between the NIHR on the one hand and the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission, the Special Investigation Unit and the Ombudsman on the other.

The meeting was attended by Chairman of the NIHR’s Committee Affairs Unit Mrs. Iman Al-Ebu and Coordinator of Programs in the Association for the Prevention of Torture Mrs. Yasmine Shams.
