NIHR Welcomes the Application of Alternative Sanctions to 30 Convicts

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) welcomes the declaration of the application of alternative sanctions to 30 convicts, which includes commuting their sanctions and obliging them to undergo some types of alternative sanctions that are expedient to their social, economic and security conditions, pursuant to the Decree-Law No. (24) of 2021 promulgated by His Majesty the Sovereign King on Alternative Sanctions and Measures.

The NIHR believes that the expansion and flexibility in the implementation of the provisions of the Law on Alternative Sanctions and Measures are in line with international standards and protocols contained in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights with respect to humane treatment of sentenced persons and respect for their human dignity, in addition to the principle of self-rehabilitation, stating its full support for the trends aimed at the implementation and expansion of more alternative sanctions, contributing to the rehabilitation of the convicts and urging them to avoid repeating criminal acts.

On this occasion, Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, Chairperson of the NIHR, stated that the NIHR participated with the concerned authorities in the implementation of alternative sanctions system in order to contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, based on its belief in the importance of the Law on Alternative Sanctions and Measures, which is a pioneering experience in the region aimed at the promotion of human rights that will positively and significantly contribute to the consolidation of family relations that enhance the stability of the society.

Al-Derazi called on all private and civil sectors, bodies and civil society institutions to involve those who undergo alternative sanctions and measures to effectively contribute to their success and expansion in order to achieve their essential purposes.
