Statement by NIHR’s Chairman on the Occasion of the International Day of Democracy

On the Occasion of the International Day of Democracy, Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, Chairman of the National institution for Human Rights (NIHR), expressed the NIHR’s great appreciation for the efforts made by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the State, in laying the foundations of democracy through the Reform Project that established the State of Institutions and Law, and stated the popular participation in order to achieve the aspirations of the citizens.

Al-Derazi also valued Royal Decree No. (26) of 2022 setting the date for election and nomination for membership in the House of Representatives, and the ministerial decision setting the date for election and nomination for membership in municipal councils, stating NIHR’s keenness, based upon its human rights position, to achieve the goals and values of democracy through respect for human rights and the principle of organising periodic fair elections by public direct secret poll, which are necessary elements for democracy, as contained in the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bahrain and the principles of the National Action Charter emphasised by the Universal Declaration for Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, in order to achieve Sustainable Development Goals 16, which is about spreading peace, justice and democracy.
