18 Apr 2019

Within the framework of a series of current visits by a delegation of the US Congress staff to the Kingdom of Bahrain, this morning the delegation visited the headquarters of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) in the Seef District. They were received by Ms. Maria Khoury, Chairperson of the NIHR’s Council of Commissioners, in the presence of a number of members of the Council and the Deputy Secretary General of the NIHR. Ms. Maria Khoury welcomed the visiting delegation and noted the strong friendship ties between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United States of America.

During the meeting, Ms. Khoury presented a brief on the NIHR’s mandate, its role in the protection and promotion of human rights, its terms of reference in providing advisory opinion on human rights issues to constitutional authorities, and its role in following-up on the human rights situation in the Kingdom of Bahrain.  At the same time, she noted the positive steps taken by the Kingdom in the promotion and protection of human rights at all levels, and Bahrain’s ranking as Tier 1 in the US State Department's Trafficking-in-Persons Report.

For its part, the delegation expressed its thanks and appreciation for the good reception and for answering its questions relating to the NIHR’s work and terms of reference.
