NIHR receives the Arab Standing Committee on Human Rights

HE Mr. Saeed bin Mohamed Al-Faihani, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), received HE Chairman of the Arab Standing Committee on Human Rights at the League of Arab States in Egypt Dr. Amjad Shammout, at the NIHR’s headquarters in Seef District, in the presence of HE Dr. Khalifa Al-Fadel, NIHR’s Acting Secretary-General.

At the beginning of the meeting, NIHR’s Chairperson welcomed Dr. Amjad, praising the deep ties that connect the Arab Islamic world with the League of Arab States, calling for the need to establish rules and scope for cooperation among the Arab States in the human rights area.

HE also stressed that the Kingdom of Bahrain is working to enhance and protect human rights for citizens and residents as well, and that the NIHR pursues all human rights issues in order to access the best possible ways of handling in conjunction with the international human rights protection mechanisms.

For his part, Chairman of the Arab Standing Committee on Human Rights Dr. Shammout praised the open political will of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, may God protect him, in the enhancement and protection of human rights, which resulted in the idea of the Arab Court of Human rights, as well as the establishment of several human rights mechanisms, NIHR being one of their fruits, stressing the importance of developing a common strategy for the protection and enhancement of human rights among the Arab States and strengthening the national mechanisms in order to miss the opportunity for suspicious international ones.

NIHR’s Acting Secretary-General Dr. Khalifa Al-Fadel emphasized the importance of shedding the light on the specificity of the Arab heritage in addressing the international human rights agenda.

The two sides agreed on the need to harmonize the Arab position towards human rights issues in regional conferences and forums and to develop an insight in the area of training of competencies in this field, in order to come up with an effective package that competes with the international agenda in the enhancement and protection of human rights.
