New Horizons to promote the Rights of the Disabled in the Kingdom of Bahrain

Ms. Maria Khouri, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), received in her office a delegation from the Bahraini Union for the Disabled headed by Mr. Fathi Abdulrahman Matar, in the presence of Mr. Abdullah Al-Derazi, NIHR’s Vice Chairperson, Dr. Aisha Mubarak, Head of the NIHR’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and Dr. Hameed Hussein, member of the same Committee.

Ms. Khouri welcomed the delegation’s visit and expressed her deep appreciation for the efforts exerted by the board of the Bahraini Union for the Disabled to achieve its noble humanitarian goals, stressing NIHR’s continuous support for all programs implemented by the Union to promote the rights of the disabled, noting the need to adopt a national strategy for the rights of the disabled.

Ms. Khouri also discussed with the head of the delegation the situation of the disabled, ways to develop services provided to them in various areas, and way to obtain more gains for this category at the same time through activating the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and adopting special standards for care hours, in coordination with relevant bodies.

For their parts, chairperson and members of the board of directors expressed their thanks and appreciation for the NIHR’s humanitarian efforts to support and activate the programs that serve the persons with disabilities, meet their demands and develop their abilities in various areas.  The head of the delegation presented the Union’s views on the priorities of each category, looking forward to more cooperation with the NIHR in all fields.
