NIHR’s Vice- Chairperson is a Member of the Technical Team for the Assessment of the Pakistani Human Rights Commission

22 Jan 2018

Mr. Abdullah Al-Derazi, Vice-Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), is a member of the Technical Team for the Assessment of the capacity of the Human Rights Commission of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, which consists of a group of experts selected by the Asia-Pacific Forum (APF) of National Human Rights Institutions, in which the NIHR is an active member, with a view to providing a technical program to raise the performance of emerging human rights institutions as per relevant international standards.

The members of the Technical Team are selected from the national human rights institutions complying with the Paris Principles adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, whose performance has been previously assessed, as well as representatives of the Office of the High Commissioners for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), chaired by the APF.

The Capacity Assessment Program aims at making a comprehensive inventory of the NIHR’s work mechanism, through its constitutive act, objectives and competencies, and then proposing mechanisms for technical support and upgrading of institutional performance for delegates and executive management in line with the principles governing the work of national human rights institutions independently in accordance with international standards.

During the visit, the NIHR’s Vice-Chairperson met with Mr. Ali Nawaz, Chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, where the two sides discussed means of activating cooperation and coordination between them in regional and international meetings and benefiting from the training programs, either established by the two sides or in cooperation with other bodies such as the Asia-Pacific Forum (APF) of National Human Rights Institutions.

It is worth noting that a team from the APF of National Human Rights Institutions assessed the capacity of the NIHR in the Kingdom of Bahrain last year in order to raise its performance and facilitate the implementation of its objectives and competencies stipulated in Law No. (26) of 2014 on the Establishment of the NIHR, modified by Decree-Law No. (20) of 2016, and proposed to implement a number of specialized training programs for members of the Board of Commissioners and General Secretariat staff.
