NIHR receives UN Coordinator and Resident Representative of the UNDP to Bahrain

Ms. Maria Khoury, Chairperson of the National institution for Human Rights (NIHR) received Mr. Amin Al-Sharkawi, the UN Coordinator and Resident Representative of the United National Development Program (UNDP) to the Kingdom of Bahrain. The meeting was attended by Dr. Khalifa bin Ali Al-Fadhel, NIHR's Secretary General. Mr. Amin Al-Sharkawi congratulated the NIHR's on becoming a partner in the United Nations Global Compact Initiative, being the first non-profit organization in Bahrain to have its membership accepted in the Initiative, and commending the NIHR Secretariat General ISO on receiving a certification in Quality Management System.

Mr. Al-Sharkawi touched on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, being an important document based on international human rights law, explaining that the 10th of December 2018 will mark the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, where a series of events and campaigns will be organized by the United Nations and the principles represented by it will be celebrated.

A number of topics related to the United Nations and human rights were discussed, including the election of Bahrain as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva for the period 2019-2021.  Mr. Al-Sharkawi stated that the Human Rights Council plays a very essential role in the United Nations human rights structure, where the Human Rights Council elections are annually held by secret ballot, with the Member States act for 3 years on a rotational basis.

The two sides also discussed means of enhancing cooperation between the NIHR and the United Nations Office in the Kingdom of Bahrain.  In addition, Mr. Al-Sharkawi expressed his appreciation to the NIHR for the progress made by it, looking forward to continued joint cooperation.
