Chairperson of the NIHR meets Permanent Representative of Switzerland

28 Jun 2017

As part of the vist by a delegation of the NIHR to a number of European cities, Mr. Saeed bin Mohamed Al-Faihani, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), met HE Ambassador Mr. Valentin Zellweger, the Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations Office in Geneva, where he explained to him the role of the NIHR to prevent any infringement of human rights and to enhance and protect those rights, noting that the NIHR, since its establishment in 2009, has been working to achieve those goals in line with the standards laid down by the Paris Principles governing the work of national institutions.

Chairperson of the NIHR added that since the declaration by the Kingdom of Bahrain and a number of Gulf and Arab States to sever the diplomatic relations with the State of Qatar, a media campaign to distort the facts has started to show that there were rights that have been violated by the boycotting countries, in particular the issuance of misleading statements by the National Human Rights Committee in the State of Qatar, which have not considered the most basic principles and concepts of human rights.

Chairperson of the NIHR added that His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, may God protect him, issued a royal order to consider the humanitarian cases of Bahraini-Qatari joint families in recognition for the brotherly Qatari people, which is a natural and genuine extension of their brothers in the Kingdom of Bahrain.  The same action was taken by the rest of the countries, where a hotline was dedicated to handle such humanitarian cases, and that the severing of relations has not affected human rights in any way.  He stressed that the NIHR is monitoring the situation closely with the aim to ensure the non-infringement of the fundamental rights of citizens of both countries.
