Ms. Maria Khoury, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), stated that the Kingdom of Bahrain is on a steady path towards promoting human rights values and principles thanks to the support by the wise leadership of the promotion of the culture of human rights and building a strong national system that supports its principles and pillars.

This came during her meeting with Mr. Victor Polyakov, Head of Gulf Group in Middle East Section of Department of Political Affairs and Peacekeeping of UN Secretariat-General, during his visit to Bahrain.

During the meeting, which was attended by Counsellor-at-Law Mr. Yasser Shaheen, Deputy Secretary General of the NIHR, Ms. Khoury welcomed Mr. Polyakov, and gave a brief about the NIHR, its goals and terms of reference set forth in its Establishment Law pursuant to the Paris Principles and its mechanisms of dealing with human rights issues.  She pointed out that the NIHR’s responsibility at the local and international level is a great human rights one and a human action that goes beyond the usual concept of human rights works, as the NIHR now has an advanced position at the local and international levels, and has become a pioneer in exporting the real image of the human rights situation of Bahrain in international forums.

For his part, Mr. Polyakov expressed his thanks and appreciation for the extensive explanation of the NIHR’s work and the response to his inquiries, praising the human rights and human role of the NIHR.

The program of the visit included a tour of the premises of the NIHR, namely the NIHR’s training center, library and call and call center for receiving complaints.
