Al delegation of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) has conducted a new field visit to the Correction and Rehabilitation Centre in “Jaw” to understand the conditions of the inmates and follow-up on the actions taken regarding the observations and recommendations submitted by the NIHR to the relevant authorities.

During the visit, the NIHR delegation held a meeting with the Centre’s officials, and also met with a number of inmates who reported that the Centre’s administration has already provided some of the services included in the NIHR’s earlier observations.

The NIHR explained that the Centre’s administration has actually implemented a number of recommendations, including increasing the sunbathing period to two and a quarter hours, expanding private visits, increasing contact numbers to seven numbers, starting to gradually activate libraries in the buildings and allowing the entry of books, continuing to open the mosque for congregational prayers, continuing to explain and clarify the rights and duties of inmates, and studying a proposal to increase the number of contact times to three times a week and for a quarter of an hour each time.  Work is also underway to implement some observations and recommendations to ensure that inmates enjoy their rights stipulated in national legislation and relevant international standards.

In the same context, the NIHR affirmed its keenness to consider all requests and comments submitted by inmates, pointing out that the Centre’s administration is following-up on the observations discussed earlier, paying attention to them and striving diligently to develop the services provided to inmates and its constructive cooperation, which contributes to permanently supporting the NIHR’s work.
