NIHR participates in the 3rd Arab Regional Conference on the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), represented by Dr. Bader Mohamed Adel, Head of the NIHR’s Committee on Public Rights and Freedoms, participated in the 3rd Arab Regional Conference on the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights entitled “Impact of Occupation and Armed Conflict on Human Rights, especially the Rights of Women and Children”, organized by the Secretariat-General of the League of Arab States

 

in cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, at the Secretariat’s headquarters in Cairo.

The two-day conference, under the sponsorship of HE Mr. Ahmed Abu Al-Ghait, Secretary-General of the League, aims to develop mechanisms to ensure the protection of human rights at times of conflict, particularly by strengthening the contents of national legislation and the relevant regional and international charters.

The conference discussed international and regional framework issues on the protection of women, the impact of the occupation on the lives of women and children, the impact of armed conflict on vulnerable groups and ways to promote access to justice for the victims.  Participants were divided into four working groups to draft recommendations on ways to implement the minimum international standards for the protection of human rights in Palestine in accordance with the Geneva Conventions, ways to mitigate the impact of conflicts on vulnerable groups, ways to strengthen the legal protection of vulnerable groups at the national level and recommendations for post-conflict stage.

The conference was attended by Arab and international figures representing members of the League, Arab specialized organizations and committees, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations, United Nations agencies and bodies concerned and academics and legal specialists and researchers.
