NIHR reviews Inmate-Students’ Performance of Mid-Year Exams

Based upon the legal and supervisory role of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), a delegation of the Council of Commissioners, under the chairpersonship of Ms. Maria Khoury, visited the Jaw Reform and Rehabilitation Center, with a view to review the progress of the inmate students’ performance of the mid-year exams, in the presence of a number of the concerned officers.

The NIHR’s delegation was briefed on the procedures of enabling the inmate-students to perform their examinations and ensured the extent of meeting the standards in this regard as well as the provision of the atmosphere and conditions appropriate for the inmate students to enjoy their rights to equal opportunities.

The Chairperson of the NIHR commended the efforts of the Ministry of Interior, represented by the Public Administration for Reform and Rehabilitation, which aim at contributing to the provision of advanced educational programs that contribute to raising the efficiency of the inmates and increasing their scientific level by absorbing their energies and directing them towards education and specialized professional work, in order to be effectively integrated into the society, praising at the same time the high demand of the inmate students and their desire to engage in the educational process.

The NIHR’s visit to the prisoners’ Reform and Rehabilitation Center falls under its plan to implement a number of field visits during 2019, in its capacity as an independent body under its Incorporation Law in accordance with the Paris Principles governing the work of national human rights institutions around the world, and accredited by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).
