The National institution for Human Rights (NIHR), represented by its Chairman, Mr. Ali Ahmed Al-Darazi, a number of the members of its Council of Commissioners and Secretary-General, participated in the annual meeting of the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) that was held remotely, which included GANHRI General Assembly meeting and a number of side activities.

During GANHRI General Assembly meeting, the attendees reviewed GANHRI annual report and adopted the audited financial report, the 2021 action plan and the 2021 annual budget.  The Chairmen of the four GANHRI geographical networks (i.e. the Asia-Pacific Forum, the African Group, the European Group and the Americas Group) reviewed the achievements of their networks.

A high-level session was held, during which the Head of the National Institutions, Regional Mechanisms and Civil Society Section, representing the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), presented an overview of the role of the OHCHR in supporting the coalition and the national institutions affiliated to it, with the participation of a representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and a representative of the European Union, in which they touched on their support for the national institutions as well as the mechanisms of joint action and future cooperation.

Three other events were also held on the sidelines of the annual meeting, which focused on exchanging knowledge of good practices, exchanging expertise and knowledge between all four networks, and how to benefit from the experiences of national human rights institutions.  Business and human rights and the experiences of national human rights institutions in implementing the Edinburgh Declaration and promoting the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles were also discussed, in addition to the GANHRI Global Action Plan on Human Rights Defenders and Civic Space.
