The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), represented by Dr. Hameed Husain, Head of the NIHR’s Council of commissioners on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, participated in a 10-day workshop on “Gender Equality, Human Rights and their Relationship to Sustainable Development”, which was held in Copenhagen, Denmark and organized by the Danish Institute for Human Rights.

The workshop, which targeted participants with experience in the field of gender equality and in positions that allow them to implement, disseminate and train their colleagues on the scientific subject of this training course, held a number of lectures on a number of themes related to the 5th Sustainable Development Goal on the equality between men and women and the difficulties that this objective may face in the Arab region, especially with regard to religious interpretations, as well as the principle of non-discrimination from a social and legal perspective.

Dr. Hameed Hussein gave a presentation on the great progress made in equality between men and women in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the prominent role played by the Supreme Council for Women through its support and continuous follow-up of the progress achieved by Bahraini women at the local and international levels, noting the award of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al-Khalifa for the empowerment of Bahraini women who have actively contributed to consolidating the concept of empowering women in government and private institutions.

The 5th Goal is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, which entered into force in January 2016, aiming basically to encourage States over the next 15 years to take concrete and transformative actions towards building a more sustainable world, with the concerted efforts of all relevant official and non-official bodies.
