NIHR Receives the US Ambassador

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Chairperson Dr. Abdul-Aziz Hassan Abul, with the presence of Chairperson of the NIHR’s Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Committee Ms. Maria Khouri, the Acting Secretary General Mr.  Yasser Shaheen and the NIHR’s Director of Information Technology and Communication Department Mr. Fahad Al Mu’alla, received at the NIHR’s headquarters the US Ambassador in Bahrain Mr. William Roebuck 

At the beginning of the meeting, the NIHR’s Chairperson welcomed the US Ambassador and praised the strong and distinguished relations between the two countries, which are reinforced by mutual cooperation in all fields.  He reviewed the NIHR’s business strategy, which corresponds with the international standards in dealing with all human rights fields, under the royal patronage of His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, may God protect him, as well as the NIHR’s sustained interest to improve the human rights system at various levels, in order to further promote all human rights aspects for citizens and non-citizens alike.

The NIHR’s Chairperson mentioned the NIHR’s role in following up the course of trials, indicating that the NIHR’s role is limited to attending trial hearings in order to verify the activation of fair trial guarantees.  Meanwhile, he emphasized that the Bahraini judiciary enjoys proven integrity and independence and has cherished and honorable national cadres.  He further praised the Future Judges Program implemented by the Supreme Judicial Council in cooperation with the NIHR, which aims at finding young cadres that are keen to promote human rights.

The NIHR’s Chairperson further mentioned the constructive cooperation between Ministry of Interior and the NIHR, praising their efforts to promote the police work and provide all necessary services to inmates of reform and rehabilitation centers by virtue of law, based upon the great attention given by Minister or Interior to the implementation of training and reform programs under the development and modernization strategy pursued by the Ministry of Interior.

On his side, the US Ambassador thanked the NIHR for the good hospitality and expressed his full willingness to provide all the support necessary for the NIHR to achieve its goals and terms of reference and strengthen mutual cooperation to enhance, protect and develop human rights in Bahrain.
