06 Apr 2023

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) has participated in the launch programme of the toolkit for actors in the field of child rights concerning dealing with the Convention on the Rights of the Child to promote the right of the child to obtain a citizenship, which was organised by the Institute of Statelessness and Inclusion, in cooperation with UNICEF, via videoconference technology.

The event touched on a number of topics related to the importance of promoting a child's right to obtain a citizenship and providing basic guidance and references towards finding the necessary legislative solutions.  Checklists were also reviewed to guide users towards gaps in national legislation that could lead to the creation of statelessness for children, in addition to training participants on how to draft reports on children's rights.

The programme is part of a series of thematic online workshops dedicated to presenting the experiences of actors regarding the protection of children’s rights from the phenomenon of statelessness, and providing basic guidance and references towards finding legislative solutions that ensure the elimination of this phenomenon.

The programme was presented by Ms. Mikiko Otani, Chair of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, Ms. Vera Karaneka, Programme and Education Officer, Ms. Dinesha Moss, Head of the Children's Programme, Ms. Thandika Shouk and Ms. Monica Sanchez Bermudez.
