NIHR meets with a group of relatives of inmates at the Rehabilitation and Correction Center (Ju)

NIHR received, on Thursday, at its headquarters, a group of relatives of inmates at the Rehabilitation and Correction Center (Ju). They brought forward several requests, encompassing matters concerning the center's procedures, insights into healthcare advancement, particularly for individuals with chronic illnesses and elderly inmates, and measures to enhance their connectivity with their families. Additionally, they deliberated on the potential expansion of alternative sentencing and open prison initiatives to widen the scope of beneficiaries, particularly for those with humanitarian circumstances and chronic illnesses meeting the eligibility criteria.


The NIHR underscores the following: Firstly, its unwavering dedication to protecting the rights of every individual, especially those incarcerated in rehabilitation and correctional centers, along with pretrial detention facilities, ensuring their rights are upheld. Secondly, it takes seriously all the observations provided by the families of inmates and pledges to forward them to the relevant authorities, continuing to monitor developments regarding these matters.

Moreover, the NIHR aims to elucidate its role as an organization dedicated to addressing diverse human rights concerns, in accordance with its supervisory mandate and the legislation underpinning its establishment. It endeavors to monitor instances of human rights violations as they arise, informing relevant stakeholders of the requisite procedures aligned with international standards and domestic laws.

In the same vein, concerning the request from the relatives of inmates for expansion and participation in the alternative sentencing project and open prison program, the National Institution wishes to clarify that it regularly receives requests from the relatives of inmates regarding the substitution of their sentences with alternative penalties. It then forwards all names to the relevant authorities, specifically the General Directorate of Execution of Judgments and Alternative Penalties at the Ministry of Interior, which coordinates with the Public Prosecution to review these requests and take necessary actions in accordance with the directives of His Majesty to expand the implementation of alternative sentencing laws, considering the social and humanitarian circumstances of the convicted individuals after conducting a study of those cases and applying the legal requirements that permit the substitution of custodial sentences with alternative penalties.

In addition, members of the NIHR Council of Commissioners continued their field visits to the Rehabilitation and Correction Center in (Ju), meeting with center officials and representatives of the inmates to assess their conditions and ensure the safeguarding of everyone's rights in the realms of healthcare, culture, and religion.
