NIHR receives First Secretary of European Union Delegation

Mr. Khaled Abdulaziz Alshaer, Vice-Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), has received Mr. Andel Linus, First Secretary of the European Union Delegation accredited to the Kingdom of Bahrain and residing in Riyadh, on the occasion of his official visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain, at the NIHR’s headquarters in the Seef district, where he welcomed him and praised the level of friendship and cooperation between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the friendly European Union countries, and the development and growth they are witnessing in various fields, expressing his appreciation for the good efforts made by members of the European Union Delegation to strengthen relations between the two sides for everything that would develop human rights work and establish principles for respecting human rights and dignity.

During the meeting, the Vice-Chairperson presented an overview of the NIHR’s work and role within the National Human Rights Plan, as well as its strategy and its work plans, pointing out that the NIHR is an independent body with a financially and administratively independent legal personality that exercises its functions freely and impartially in all matters relating to human rights.

The Vice-Chairperson also reviewed the NIHR efforts under the Coronavirus pandemic to raise awareness of citizens and residents through its data and tweets, as well as the declared and undeclared visits by a number of its delegates to isolation and quarantine centres to review the procedures taken by those bodies to provide medical services to the injured and contacts in accordance with international standards, in addition to its field visits to correction, rehabilitation and detention centres during the Ashura season 2020, with the aim to closely ensure the continued practice of inmates and inmates in those centres of their religious rituals, in accordance with relevant international human rights standards and the regulations and bylaws of correction and rehabilitation centres.

For his part, the First Secretary of the European Union Delegation expressed his appreciation for the NIHR’s efforts to promote and protect human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, praising at the same time the Kingdom's efforts to promote peace in the region.
