NIHR Receives Director of Arabian Peninsula Affairs for the United States Department of State

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) Chairperson Dr. Abdul-Aziz Hassan Abul received Director of the Arabian Peninsula Affairs for the US Department of State Mrs. Ellen Germain at the NIHR’s headquarters in the presence of NIHR Vice chairperson Mr. Abdullah Al-Derazi, Head of NIHR Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Ms. Maria Khouri and NIHR’s Acting Secretary-General Mr. Yasser Shaheen.

At the beginning of the meeting, the NIHR Chairperson welcomed Mrs. Germain and praised the deep relationships between the two countries in all areas, expressing his wishes to foster their cooperation especially in the area of training and education on human rights mechanisms and concepts.  After that, he briefed her with the subjects covered by NIHR’s two annual reports for 2015 and 2016, which have been recently launched.

NIHR Vice chairperson introduced information on NIHR’s establishment date since 2009 as well as the composition of members of its Council of Commissioners and the recent modifications made on its Establishment Law as per Decree – Law No. 20 of 2016.  Furthermore, Head of NIHR Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up explained the mechanism of receiving complaints and procedures for dealing with them as well as the legal assistance provided to the citizens and the residents as well.  She further dealt with monitoring of cases and procedures for dealing with them from what is published in the local press, the media and social communication networks.

On her side, Director of the Arabian Peninsula Affairs for the US Department of State Mrs. Ellen Germain expressed her contentment with the NIHR’s adopted role in the area of human rights protection and fostering in Bahrain and emphasized the importance of enhancing this role as well as the provision of support to it through holding training programs that aim at enhancing its work.
