NIHR Participates in GANHRI General Meeting in Geneva
The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s delegation, under the chairpersonship of NIHR Vice chairperson Mr Abdullah Al-Derazi and membership of Head of NIHR Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Ms. Maria Khouri and NIHR’s Acting Secretary-General Mr. Yasser Ghanem Shaheen, participated in the general meeting of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), which was held at the UN Palace in Geneva.
The meeting was opened by Secretary of the GANHRI Mrs. Montserrat Carboni and two sessions were held. The first session focused on Business and Human Rights and was led by Head of the African group for Human Rights and Chairman of the National Commission on Human Rights in Cameron Mr. Chemuta Banda. This session was spoken by representatives of the national human rights institutions in Denmark, Zambia and Colombia on their experiences in the area of protection and enhancement of human rights and business through provision of training, development of national plans and monitoring the activities of companies during their implementation of business projects that affect individuals’ exercising of their rights. This session was followed by an interactive dialogue with member institutions in the Alliance.
The second session focused on Migration and Refugees and was led by Head of the Americas group for human rights and Chairman of the Office of the Ombudsman in Bolivia. This session was spoken by representatives of the national human rights institutions in Netherlands, Morocco and Malaysia and discussed the role of the national human rights institution to ensure that migrants and refugees have access to their rights, monitor their reception centers and cooperate with international organization to ensure the right to information and the right to healthcare and education.
