NIHR Chairman Participates in the 41st mission of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review in Geneva

Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, Chairman of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), has participated in the 41st session of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), which began its first session with the review of the Kingdom of Bahrain, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

On this occasion, Al-Derazi stated the importance of the review and the great efforts made by the Kingdom of Bahrain to advance human rights, especially after the launch of the National Plan 2022-2026.  He added that the NIHR submitted its parallel report to the UPR Working Group, which contained a number of recommendations that reinforce the concepts of human rights and conform to international standards.  The report can be viewed by visiting the NIHR website (Reports Section).

The NIHR delegation also met with Ambassador Mark Bestin, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Belgium to the United Nations in Geneva, where a brief was given on the NIHR’s establishment and its role and competencies in the protection and promotion of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

For his part, the Belgian ambassador expressed his thanks for this visit and expressed his interest in the role of the NIHR.

The two sides discussed the mechanisms of cooperation and provision of technical support to improve the NIHR’s work in the field of the protection of human rights.

The meeting was attended by Mrs. Rawdha Al-Aradi, Head of the NIHR Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up, and Chancellor Yasser Ghanim Shaheen, NIHR Secretary-General.
