NIHR Participates in GANHRI General Meeting at the UN Palace in Geneva

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s delegation, under the chairpersonship of NIHR Vice chairperson Mr. Abdullah Al-Derazi and membership of Head of NIHR Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Ms. Maria Khouri and NIHR’s Acting Secretary-General Mr. Yasser Shaheen, participated in the general meeting of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), which was held at the UN Palace in Geneva.

The meeting was opened by Director of the GANHRI Professor Beate Rudolf, and it included approval of the agenda and ratification of the 16 new members in the Alliance that are representatives of the national human rights institutions in the 4 regional groups, which are:  the African group:  Cameron as president, Egypt, South Africa and Togo, the Americas:  Bolivia as president, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Venezuela, Asia and Pacific:  Mongolia as president, Australia, India and Qatar, and Europe:  Croatia as president, Finland, Germany and Georgia.

The panel further approved modification of the GANHRI statute and the internal regulation of the Subcommittee on Accreditation as well as financial report for 2016.  It also discussed budget of 2017 as well as the estimated amounts of income and expenditure and the importance of receiving external support and contributions to support the GANHRI activities.

The panel further reviewed the GANHRI progress report, including the achievements against strategic objectives and the resolutions presented to the GANHRI on achieving such objectives.  It also reviewed the GANHRI working team reports, which included a report on activities of the working team on older persons headed by the National Commission on Human Rights in Korea, the working team on commercial enterprises and human rights headed by the national human rights institution on Morocco and the working team on ongoing development headed by the national human rights institution in Ecuador.

The panel further approved the strategic plan for 2017 – 2019 and the executive plan for 2017 as well as report of the Subcommittee on Accreditation that was presented in its meeting held in November 2016.  It also granted certificates to the 15 national human rights institutions that obtained the standard classification (a) for the previous year, namely the national human rights institutions of Zimbabwe, Canada, Korea, New Zealand, North Ireland, Sierra Leone, Australia, Costa Rica, Salvador, Jordan, Malawi, Mexico, Nigeria, Samoa and Uruguay.
