NIHR holds Fourth Ordinary Meeting

The Board of Directors of the National Institution for Human Rights held its Fourth Ordinary Meeting under the Chairmanship of His Excellency Dr. Abdulaziz Hassan Abul at its headquarters in Seef District.
The Board was briefed on the NIHR activities in the second quarter of 2015, by its Assistant Secretary General. Chairman of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Farid Ghazi briefed members on the proposed amendments to a number of the Educational Act Materials to determine the compulsory age for education. The Board heard a presentation from its Civil and Political Rights Committee, Jameela Ali Salman on a proposal to partly modify the Criminal Procedure Code in sections related to the resumption of pre-trial detention or appealing against it. These proposals would later be submitted to the concerned authorities.
The Board also approved NIHR views on the Draft Domestic Workers Law and a legal assistance bill at the request of the House of Representatives. These proposals would be submitted to the President of the House of Representatives.
Chairperson of the Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Committee, Maria Khoury, reviewed the complaints and requests for assistance received and action that had been taken to address them.
The Board approved amendments to the organizational structure and job titles of the NIHR Secretariat and said it would take part in the 30th session of the Human Rights Council, in Geneva on September 30.
The Board agreed to hold its next meeting in November.
