NIHR Council of Commissioners Convenes its 7th Regular Meeting

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) Council of Commissioners has convened its 7th regular meeting, under the chairpersonship of Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, Chairman of the NIHR, and membership of all members of the Board and the NIHR Secretary-General.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Council congratulated Mr. Ahmed AL-Saloom, on the occasion of his winning in the parliamentary elections 2022, wishing him all success.

Then, the heads of the permanent quality committees presented an overview of their committees’ work and achievements during the past three months, where D. Fawzeya Al-Saleh, Head of the NIHR Committee on Public Rights and Freedoms, stated that the Committee submitted a number of additional proposals on the draft Law on Domestic Labour to be included among the NIHR’s views submitted to the House of Representatives in 2015 and 2018, as the draft law is currently being examined before the House of Representatives, in addition to proposing a number of educational leaflets related to the electoral process, which were placed on the NIHR social networking sites during the parliamentary and municipal elections that took place last week.

The Committee also discussed organising several training programmes during the next year, targeting civil society organisations.  D. Malallah Al-Hammadi, Head of the NIHR Committee on Visiting Places of Detention and Facilities, gave an overview of the Committee’s work, as the Committee has recently requested to visit a number of places, where the focus will be placed in the coming period on public and private educational centres, in implementation of the Committee’s terms of reference contained in the NIHR Establishment Law and the By-law regulating the work of the Council of Commissioners.  He also reviewed places that have recently been visited, including correction and rehabilitation centres, arrest and pretrial detention centres, care houses and deportation centres.

For her part, Mrs. Rawdha Al-Aradi, Head of the NIHR Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up, presented a summary of the complaints received, the legal aids provided, and the monitoring cases recorded by the NIHR, which amounted to 122.  She also stated that the NIHR has received 114 calls through the toll-free hotline during the last period, all of which were dealt with and followed-up, in communication with the concerned authorities, to find out appropriate solutions for them.

The NIHR Council of Commissioners approved the Secretariat-General’s report for the third quarter (July, August and September 2022).  The Council thanked the Secretariat-General for its work aimed at supporting the NIHR’s work.
