NIHR Council of Commissioners convenes its 10th Regular Meeting

Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, Chairman of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), has presided the 10th meeting of the NIHR Council of Commissioners, with the participation of Board members and NIHR Secretary-General.

The heads and representatives of the NIHR permanent committees started the meeting by presenting an overview of the work of their committees.  Mrs. Rawda Al-Aradi, Head of the NIHR Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up, presented an overview of the complaints received by the NIHR, the legal aids provided, and the cases monitored during the past three months, which amounted to 145.  She stated that 23 people submitted their complaints to the NIHR by personal attendance, while the NIHR hotline received 61 calls, in addition to 61 complaints received by the NIHR email, mobile application NIHR Bahrain and the NIHR website, and that the relevant authorities in the Kingdom have been contacted to follow-up all the cases received and find out the best solutions for them.

Dr. Malallah Al-Hammadi, Head of the NIHR Committee on Visiting Detention Places and Facilities, presented an overview of his committee’s work.  He stated that during the past three months the Committee has conducted field visits to several places, including a joint visit to correction, rehabilitation, and pretrial detention centres during the Ashura season of 1445.  He also explained the Committee’s proposal to visit the outpatient clinics building for Gynecology, Obstetrics and Newborns (JidHafs), as well as the Correction, Rehabilitation and Pretrial Detention Centre (the minors' building in the Dry Dock region), and the Child Protection Centre located in Hamad Town region in the coming period, in addition to the visits conducted to the Correction and Rehabilitation Centre (Jaw region) and the Hidd Rehabilitation Centre for Special Needs.

D. Bader Adel, member of the NIHR Committee on Public Rights and Freedoms, also presented an overview of the most important work carried out by the Committee, which revolved around preparing and reviewing a number of the NIHR's views regarding law proposals received from the House of Representatives, reviewing advisory opinions related to domestic workers, and proposing a number of lectures to prepare people who will benefit from alternative sanctions and measures.

For his part, Mr. Ahmed Al-Saloom, member of the NIHR Council of Commissioners, presented a summary of what was done regarding the NIHR's proposal to involve private sector companies in training and employing beneficiaries of the alternative sanctions mechanism, and the next steps to involve a larger number of beneficiaries of alternative sanctions, as the Chairman of the NIHR stressed the importance of the NIHR continuation in following up on this file and coordinating with all relevant parties.

At the end of the meeting, the Council adopted the Secretary-General's report for the second quarter of 2023 and stressed the important role of the NIHR Secretariat-General in providing support to the Board of Commissioners.
