NIHR Council of Commissioners Bureau Convenes its 20th Regular Meeting

03 Jul 2024

The twentieth regular meeting of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) Council of Commissioners Bureau, chaired by Eng. Ali Ahmed Alderazi, included the participation of the Vice Chairperson and the heads of the NIHR standing committees, with the Secretary-General in attendance. The Bureau commenced its meeting by reaffirming the NIHR's commitment to continuing its monitoring role in the field of human rights protection and enhancement. It emphasized the importance of ensuring respect for the fundamental rights of individuals, as guaranteed under national and international legislation, by organizing field visits to correctional and pre-trial detention centers. This is particularly timely as the Ashura season approaches, aiming to ensure that all inmates in these centers fully enjoy their fundamental rights, including the freedom to practice their religious rituals without discrimination or restriction.

In the same context, the Bureau also reviewed a detailed report on recent visits to the correctional facility in Jau and discussed the key recommendations submitted to the relevant authorities. Special attention was given to recommendations aimed at improving medical care for inmates and enhancing cooperation with these authorities to ensure the fulfillment of these goals.
