NIHR’s Committee on Civil and Political Rights Convenes its 1st Regular Meeting

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Civil and Political Rights convened its 1st regular meeting under the chairpersonship of Dr. Badr Mohamed Adel. Present were Committee members Mr. Ahmed Mahdi Al-Haddad and Mrs. Wedad Radhi Al Mousawi. The Committee reviewed the terms of reference assigned to the Committee under the executive regulation on the organization and action of the NIHR and discussed the most important achievements recently made by the Committee.

In a related context, the Committee considered the request for opinion referred to it by the Council of Representatives regarding the draft law to amend some of the provisions of the Panel Code issued by Decree – Law No. (17) of 1976, where it decided to consider it during the next Committee meeting for further study and review.

Moreover, the Committee agreed on NIHR’s opinions on the development of an information plan to spread the culture of the right to peaceful assembly, in light of the proposal referred to it by the Council of Representatives.

It is worth mentioning that NIHR’s Committee on Civil and Political Rights is one of NIHR’s permanent specific Committees.  It is concerned with expressing opinions on civil and political human rights issues, developing proposals and recommendations in everything that aims to enhance and protect the civil and political human rights, studying the laws and regulations in force in the Kingdom of Bahrain in relation to civil and political rights, recommending appropriate amendments thereof, showing opinion on whether or not they are compatible with the international human rights standards, providing necessary proposals thereon, recommending the issuance of new laws on human rights, following-up the application of the relevant international conventions and treaties and reviewing the reservations made by Bahrain to certain provisions of the conventions that have been accessed by it.
