12 Jan 2022
The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Public Rights and Freedoms has convened its 8th meeting virtually under the chairpersonship of Dr. Fawzeya Saeed Al-Saleh and membership of Dr. Bader Mohamed Adel and Mr. Ahmed Subah Al-Saloom.
The Committee opened its meeting by ensuring the quorum of the meeting and approving previous meeting minutes. Then, it discussed its previous resolutions and recommendations and the actions taken thereupon.
The Committee also discussed its previous recommendations to seek opinion of the Ministry of Works, Municipalities and Urban Planning regarding NIHR’s initiative #Let’sHelpThemReach, which aims to prepare public and private areas to be accessible by the disabled, where the Committee noted the Ministry’s rapid and clear response.
On the other hand, the Committee is still waiting for the opinion of the authorities responsible for special facilities, such as shopping malls and recreational facilities, to determine the availability of services provided to people with disabilities, including but not limited to wheelchairs and the convenience of entry gates and elevators to make such facilities safely and easily accessible by the disabled.
