The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Convenes its 19th Regular Meeting
02 Nov 2016
The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights held its 19th regular meeting at the NIHR headquarters in the Seef District under the chairpersonship of Mr. Fareed Ghazi. Committee Members Dr. Abdulrrahman Jawaheri and Dr. Jameela Al-Sammak attended the meeting.
The Committee discussed the view of the Secretary-General based upon its proposal to hold a number of events to enhance the socio-environmental culture and highlight the challenges surrounding this right in order to have an integrated legislative system to ensure the protection of the right to a healthy environment against any irrational practices. Such events are hoped to be implemented at the beginning of 2017.
On the other hand, the Committee discussed the proposal of law to amend Article 2 of Law No. 74 of 2006 on the care, rehabilitation and employment of the handicapped, prepared in light of the draft law presented by the esteemed Shura Council and referred to the NIHR for its opinion. The mentioned draft law aims to support the Bahraini woman married to a foreigner with a handicapped child whose health conditions require special care and services. Members of the Committee commended the noble aims of the draft law as well as the efforts of legislative authority in completing the legislative system for all society groups to ensure the exercise of rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bahrain and without any discrimination.
It is worth mentioning that the Committee on Economic Rights is one of NIHR’s standing specific committees concerned with giving opinion on issues related to economic, social and cultural human rights, following-up public opinion issues and relevant information programs, studying economic conditions in the Kingdom in terms of income and price level, evaluating educational curricula and offering feedback on their development pursuant to international standards, following-up on the application of relevant international conventions and treaties, and reviewing Kingdom’s reservations entered on some provisions of conventions Bahrain had acceded to.
