NIHR's Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Holds its 9th Regular Meeting

The National Institution for Human Rights' (NIHR) Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights held its 9th regular meeting under the chairpersonship of Mr. Farid Ghazi. The meeting was held at  the NIHR's headquarters in the Seef District and was  attended by Committee Members Dr. Abdulrrahman Jawaheri and Dr. Jameela Al-Sammak 

The Committee reviewed a study prepared by the Secretariat-General on legal protection of disabled persons in the Bahraini legislation, focusing on the deaf, as well as endeavors of the Government of Bahrain to secure all their rights in line with its international obligations in this regard.  The study dealt with legal protection for disabled persons in the Bahraini legislation as well as in relevant international instruments and conventions.  In addition, the Committee touched on the institutional architecture established by the Kingdom of Bahrain to secure basic rights for this category including right to education, employment and economic empowerment, in addition to their rights at service-based governmental departments.  The study concluded with a number of recommendations for raising the profile of disabled persons and secure their complete rights like all categories of the Bahraini Society.

On the other hand, the Committee discussed Law No. (18) of 2014 on issuing Reform and Rehabilitation Foundation Law and its Executive Bylaws.  The Committee entrusted the Secretariat-General to prepare a research paper on the most important legislative or practical shortcomings and the proposed alternatives of the stipulations of Law No. (18) of 2014 on issuing Reform and Rehabilitation Foundation  Law and its Executive Bylaws, with a special focus on the idea of punishment alternative for certain crimes.

Meanwhile, and in embodiment of the NIHR’s role in promoting  and protecting  human rights and supporting the bodies concerned, including the Executive Authority in Bahrain as well as civil society organizations in the implementation  of human rights as the Kingdom of Bahrain is striving to achieve, in addition to conducting field visits as per established standards in order to review the human rights situation including the right to health, the Committee decided to visit Salmaniya Medical Complex, in cooperation with the rest of standing specific committees at the  NIHR in order to monitor the conditions of patients within the coming few days.
