Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Holds its Thirteenth Meeting

The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural of National Institution for Human Rights held its regular thirteen meeting at the headquarters of the National Institution at Seef District headed by Mr. Farid Ghazi, and membership of Dr. Abdel Rahman Jawahery and Dr. Gamela Al-Sammak,
The Committee reviewed all the achievements carried out during the period from April 2015 until April 2016, which include the proposal on modifying the provisions of articles (1), (6), and (7) of Law No. 27 of 2005 on education, so as to extend the age of free and compulsory education to include secondary education, in addition to a proposal related to modifying the text of the second paragraph of Article 21 of Law No. (74) of 2006 on the care and rehabilitation of disabled persons. The meeting also examined a number of visions the Committee has prepared on proposed laws referred to it by the legislature relevant to human rights laws.
On the other hand, the Committee reviewed a proposal on the establishment of a public prosecution specialized in the Environment and specialized courts for environmental violations and crimes in light of international global, and Arab interest in this regard. The Secretariat-General has been commissioned to carry out further study of the experiences of other countries that have made strides in this area.
It is worth mentioning that the Committee on Economic Rights is one of the permanent specific standing committees of the Institution competent to give an opinion on issues related to human rights, including economic, social and cultural rights, as well as following up relevant public issues and public information programs.
Its competences also include studying the economic conditions in the Kingdom in terms of the level of income and prices, and evaluating, giving feedback and evaluating curricula in accordance with international standards, in addition to monitoring the implementation of international conventions and treaties and reviewing the reservations that have been entered the by the Kingdom on some of the agreement texts the Kingdom had already acceded to.
