NIHR’s Committee on Visiting Detention Places and Facilities convenes its Monthly Meeting

16 Sep 2024

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Visiting Detention Places and Facilities has convened its monthly regular meeting, under the chairpersonship of D. Malallah J. Al-Hammadi, and membership of Mrs. Hala Ramzi Fayez, and Dr. Hooria Hassan.

The committee commenced its session by evaluating the plan for upcoming field visits scheduled later this year, which encompass a selection of health and social care facilities along with educational institutions. A consensus was reached to execute four visits in the ensuing weeks to key sites including the Open Prisons Complex in the Hamala area, the Northern Governorate Police Station, the Sheikh Farsi Center for Comprehensive Communication, and a private educational institution. The primary objectives of these visits are to scrutinize the human rights environment and verify the protection of fundamental rights for residents and visitors of these facilities, ensuring alignment with both national laws and applicable international agreements, in accordance with the committee’s mandates.

Moreover, the meeting concluded with the committee rigorously reviewing the progress made on implementing its strategic decisions and prior recommendations, with a particular emphasis on the responses from various governmental agencies concerning the committee's suggestions from earlier inspections and their practical application.
