NIHR’s Committee on Visiting Detention Places and Facilities is convening its 2nd Meeting Virtually
01 Aug 2021
The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Visiting Detention Places and Facilities has convened its 2nd meeting virtually under the chairpersonship of Mrs. Deena Al-Ladhi and membership of Mr. Daniel Cohen.
The Committee opened its meeting by commending the efforts of the National Taskforce for Combatting the Coronavirus (COVID-19) on the front lines and the supporting bodies in the anti-Covid-19 campaign, and their active role in preserving the health and safety of citizens and residents. Then, it reviewed all its previous resolutions and recommendations and the actions taken thereupon.
Based upon the Committee’s keenness to activate the NIHR’s oversight role in the area of protection and promotion of human rights, especially for correction and rehabilitation centres, health, social and educational care centres, foreign labor accommodation places or any other place suspected to be a site of human rights violations, the Committee continued the discussion on the planned field visits to a number of correction and rehabilitation centres, in addition to conducting visits to some centres specialized in social care, especially those concerned with the care for people with disabilities, in order to closely review the actions taken by officials of those centres under Covid-19 conditions, and understand to what extent human rights standards are being adhered to.
